Delaware County Libraries to Become Chemisty Lab for
Elementary School Students during GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer

Registration Runs May 3-29 — Space is Limited

Who:
Delaware County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Delaware County students about Chemistry in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will learn what “matter” is and why it is not always the same. They will make crystals and perform experiments with litmus paper to discover if substances are acids or bases. Students will turn pennies into gold and make balloons fly.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.) and in the afternoon (Level I: 2:00 - 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:00 - 3:45 p.m.).  See below for course dates.

Why:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning.  This year’s class will mark over 100,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia region who will have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception 24 years ago.

Registration Information
Parents must register their children in person at the library they wish to attend.
