Chester County Libraries to Become Genetics Labs for
Elementary School Students during GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer

Who:
Chester County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Chester County students about Genetics in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will learn about Genetics through interesting investigations that include building a cell to learn more about chromosomes and genes, extracting DNA from a strawberry, examining their fingerprints and building a model of a DNA molecule.

Chester County, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program is comprised of four 60-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 9:45- 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:00 a.m. – Noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 12:45 - 1:45 p.m., Level II: 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.). For libraries with a.m or p.m sessions only, times are Level I: 9:45 – 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:00 a.m. - Noon ) and Level I: 1:45 – 2:45 p.m., Level II: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. See below for course dates, times and library phone numbers.

Why:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning. This year’s class will mark over 100,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia region who will have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception 24 years ago.

 
 

Registration Information
Registration for all Chester County Libraries is May 1-29, 2010.

Parents must register their children in person at the library they wish to attend. If necessary, students will be chosen via lottery and notified by June 7, except for Easttown Library. At Easttown, applications will be available beginning May 31 with registration on June 30 from 6-8 p.m.
