Elementary School Students during GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer

Registration Begins in June — Space is Limited

Who:
Bucks County students entering second through sixth grade are invited to register and attend GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program, a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).  GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in partnership with local libraries.

What:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will teach Bucks County students about Oceanography in a class designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will explore the world of Oceanography using microscopes, microviewers and magnifying glasses to observe microscopic sea creatures. They will examine sponges, coral and mollusks and learn about sharks.

In Bucks County, GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. Sessions are offered in the morning (Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. – Noon) and in the afternoon (Level I: 1:00 - 1:45 p.m., Level II: 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.). To register, parents must come in person to the library they wish their child to attend. Students are selected to participate either through a lottery or on a first-come basis.  Please contact the library for more information.  See below for registration and course dates, times and library phone numbers.

Why:
GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer opens young minds to the world of science and fosters a life-long appreciation of learning.  This year’s class will mark over 100,000 students from the Delaware Valley who will have participated in GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer since its inception 24 years ago.
